THE HISTORY & ETHOS OF WESTLAKES SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY PARK
Westlakes Science and Technology Park was established in the late 1980s as the flagship development project of the West Cumbria Partnership. The Partnership's main aim is job creation through a knowledge-based economy centred on business, research and higher education.

By 2008 Westlakes is home to 70 organisations employing more than 1272 people in eleven major buildings. Over 240,000 sq feet of accommodation has been created through investment of more than £27m. The Science Park has capacity for more than 600,000 sq. ft. of development.
Westlakes provides high-quality accommodation, research links to higher educational institutions and appropriate support structures to enable knowledge-based businesses to grow and develop.
The Park has two areas of focus:
- it is home not only to a nationally significant cluster of businesses and organisations providing support services to the Nuclear Industry, but also The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority(NDA).
- through the work of the UCLan's Westlakes Research Institute it provides a basis for future expansion and development by companies whose business has synergy with the in-house research into applied environmental sciences and healthcare informatics.
Situated on the edge of the Lake District, Westlakes extends to some 130 acres making it the eighth largest Science Park in the UK. To date approximately half has been developed and extensively landscaped in sympathy with its original parkland setting.
Work on the latest Phase of development was completed in 2005 including the completion of a 1 mile ring road. This project created 7 more serviced Plateaux suitable for development to accommodate local and inward investment companies.
Developments on the Park have been funded by:
