RAISING THE AWARENESS OF

SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY IN PRIMARY SCHOOLS

West Cumbrian Primary School teachers visited the Westlakes Science & Technology Park on Wednesday, 19th November 2003 . Their aim was to explore how Westlakes could work with teachers to help raise the awareness of pupils to the importance of Science and Technology in daily life.

The afternoon began with a tour of the Science Park which illustrated the significant level of development that has, and currently is taking place. Teachers were give presentations by Westlakes Properties General Manager, Dr Doug Millington and Westlakes Research Institute, Head of Academic Programmes, Dr Tony Abbott. These were followed by contributions from two of the Parks tenants, ICON Controls and DGPi, who gave brief descriptions of their company's activities.

The discussion was found to be very useful by all parties and some interesting ideas were put forward for meaningful ways to engage primary schools and pupils in the future.

Kaye Roberts, PR & Marketing Officer for Westlakes Properties said "We think this was a very positive event. It enabled us to see how, by working together, we can help the younger generations realise that their future is very dependent on the scientific and technological developments of the 21st Century".
